DESCRIPTION:Some public decisions have consequences that last for decades\, shaping future infrastructure\, environmental outcomes\, fiscal pressures and the choices available to future generations.  \n\n\n\nThis talk explores how cost-benefit analysis can support sustainable governance in those long-term decisions. Rather than focusing on how to conduct a CBA\, it asks what role CBA should play when governments must weigh quantified evidence alongside stewardship\, accountability and the long-term public interest.  \n\n\n\nThe central argument is that good governance does not require abandoning CBA\, but using it as part of a broader decision framework for choices whose consequences extend well into the future.

That discipline is useful\, but it can make decisions seem more certain than they are.  \n\n\n\nThis talk looks beneath the result\, asking how much confidence decision-makers should place in it and how assumptions about the problem\, counterfactual\, forecasts\, distribution\, discounting and uncertainty affect its interpretation and use.  \n\n\n\nDesigned for public servants with some familiarity with CBA\, the session offers practical questions for testing robustness\, recognising overstated confidence and making assumptions\, trade-offs and judgement more visible. The aim is not to distrust CBA\, but to use it more intelligently before advising on significant public decisions.
